Today, in our small bilingual nursery school, a brief focus on our numeracy workshop for Senior Kindergarten in 3 stages: recognition of numbers up to 10, then up to 20, followed by simple additions, thanks to Montessori's bead materials and the Seguin table, as well as natural materials inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, such as wooden logs.
First stage: from 1 to 10
Each person randomly draws numbered cards. Then, the children select the bead bar corresponding to the drawn number. Next, we quantify the number using both beads and wooden logs. So, we have one on top of the other: the number; the beads; and the quantity represented by the wooden logs. This approach allows us to work on both number recognition and counting
Second stage: from 10 to 20
We move on to the tens and repeat the process, this time using the Seguin tens board. A child draws a numbered card from the deck or picks one from the wooden logs and tells the other children. Another child chooses the units digit to add on the Seguin tens board.
Third stage
Once this part is well-practiced, we move on to additions using beads and wooden logs. We count the units first and then progress to the tens plus units. After all these exercises, we conclude our session with a brief written activity where the children have to provide the sums of the given additions.
